There is something uniquely disorienting about a wolf in shepherd’s clothing. A straightforward atheist, however wrong, is at least honest about where he stands. But a figure who wears the vocabulary of Christian faith—who quotes Scripture, attends seminary, invokes the name of Jesus—while systematically emptying those words of their historic meaning presents a far more subtle danger.
