Gen Z: Becoming the Nonanxious Generation in Christ

Gen Z: Becoming the Nonanxious Generation in Christ

Anxiety is a word that seems to define our age, and no generation feels its weight more than Gen Z. Smartphones, social media, and a screen-saturated culture have rewired the way young people experience the world. As one article pointed out, this “great rewiring” has contributed to skyrocketing rates of depression, anxiety, and self-harm since 2010. Yet, as Christians, we know anxiety is not the end of the story. Scripture invites us to cast our burdens on the Lord, for He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). Gen Z, you don’t have to be the anxious generation. In Christ, you can become the nonanxious generation, living in the peace that only He can give.

The Roots of Anxiety: A Biblical Diagnosis

What does the Bible say about the underlying causes of anxiety? Anxiety is ultimately a symptom of living in a fallen world. When Adam and Eve sinned, humanity’s perfect communion with God was broken (Genesis 3:8-10). Fear and shame entered the human experience, and we’ve been wrestling with their effects ever since. The prophet Jeremiah described the human heart as “deceitful above all things, and desperately sick” (Jeremiah 17:9). This sickness includes our tendency to trust in ourselves, our circumstances, or the things of this world rather than in God.

Jesus addressed anxiety directly in the Sermon on the Mount, saying, “Do not be anxious about your life… Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?” (Matthew 6:25). He pointed to how anxiety arises when we focus on earthly concerns instead of trusting in our heavenly Father’s provision. Anxiety thrives when we forget who God is—our Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer—and when we rely on ourselves instead of Him.

The Answer in Christ

Thankfully, the Bible doesn’t leave us in despair. The gospel of Jesus Christ is the ultimate antidote to anxiety. Jesus said, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). He invites us to exchange our burdens for His peace, a peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

Through His death and resurrection, Jesus reconciles us to God and restores the broken relationship that sin has caused. In Him, we are no longer alienated or alone. Paul reminds us in Romans 8:38-39 that nothing—not anxiety, not fear, not even death—can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. This love is the foundation of our confidence and peace.

Moreover, Jesus has given us His Spirit to dwell within us. The Holy Spirit is our Comforter, Counselor, and the one who produces the fruit of peace in our lives (Galatians 5:22). As we abide in Christ, we can experience the deep, abiding peace that comes from knowing we are held securely in God’s hands.

Living It Out: Practical Steps for Gen Z

How can Gen Z live as the nonanxious generation? Here are four biblical practices to cultivate:

1. Fix Your Eyes on Jesus

The author of Hebrews exhorts us to “lay aside every weight… and run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:1-2). Make time daily to read Scripture, meditate on God’s promises, and pray. Let God’s Word shape your identity and your perspective.

2. Root Yourself in Community

Isolation fuels anxiety, but biblical community brings healing. The early church modeled this beautifully: “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers” (Acts 2:42). Join a local church, invest in relationships, and seek accountability. True fellowship reminds us that we are not alone and points us back to Christ.

3. Practice Gratitude and Trust

Anxiety often stems from focusing on what we lack or fear. Paul encourages us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6). Cultivate a habit of gratitude, thanking God for His faithfulness and entrusting your worries to Him.

4. Live for God’s Glory

Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). True peace comes not from self-fulfillment but from self-denial and living for God’s glory. Serve others, share the gospel, and invest in things of eternal significance. As you shift your focus from yourself to Christ, you’ll find freedom from the weight of anxiety.

The Gospel: Our True Hope

The good news of the gospel is that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Our sin separates us from God and leaves us burdened by anxiety, fear, and hopelessness. But Jesus took our sin upon Himself, dying in our place and rising again to give us new life. Through faith in Him, we are forgiven, redeemed, and adopted as children of God.

If you are weighed down by anxiety, turn to Jesus. Confess your need for Him, believe in His finished work on the cross, and receive His grace. In Christ, you are no longer defined by fear. You are defined by His love, His peace, and His victory. Gen Z, you can become the nonanxious generation—not because of your own strength, but because of the transforming power of the gospel. Trust in Him, and walk in His peace today.
